How to Turn Your Handwriting Into a Font

A realistic guide to going from pen-on-paper to an installable TTF in about ten minutes — including the parts most tutorials skip.

Turning your handwriting into a font used to mean an afternoon with a scanner and font-editing software. Today it takes about ten minutes: write a sample, photograph it, and let software do the vector work. You end up with a real TTF file you can install on your Mac or PC and use in Word, Google Docs, Procreate, Canva — anywhere fonts work.

This guide covers the two ways to do it, a step-by-step walkthrough, and the sample-writing tips that make the difference between a font that looks like you and a font that looks like a ransom note.

Two ways to do it: template tracing vs. AI generation

Every handwriting-to-font tool works one of two ways, and picking the right one matters more than picking the right brand.

1. Template tracing (the classic way)

2. AI generation (the fast way)

Step by step: handwriting to installed font

  1. Write a sample

    Grab white, unlined paper and a black pen or fine marker. Write two or three sentences that cover the alphabet — a pangram like "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" plus its uppercase version and the digits 0–9 is ideal. Write at the size you naturally write; don't perform.

  2. Photograph or scan it

    Daylight, no shadows, camera square to the page. A phone photo is fine — what matters is contrast (dark ink, pale paper) and focus. Skip the notebook with grid lines; tracing algorithms will happily turn ruled lines into font artifacts.

  3. Upload and generate

    In the Coki Fonts app, create a project and upload your sample as the reference image. The AI analyzes the style — stroke weight, slant, proportions, how you dot your i's — and draws a complete glyph sheet: A–Z, a–z, digits, and punctuation, all in your hand.

  4. Trace and review

Sample tips that actually change the result

  • Black ink on white paper. Blue ballpoint on cream paper cuts your contrast in half, and contrast is what tracing runs on.
  • Medium pen, not fine. Very thin strokes can break up when binarized. A gel pen or fine felt-tip beats a hard pencil every time.
  • Consistent size and slant. Write one calm, steady paragraph rather than showing off five moods of your handwriting. The AI will amplify whatever tendencies it sees.
  • Include what you actually type. If you use ampersands, question marks, or numbers a lot, make sure they're in the sample so the style has a reference for them.

What about cursive?

Here's the answer most tools bury: fully connected cursive doesn't survive the trip. A font types one letter at a time, and making letters genuinely connect requires OpenType ligatures and contextual alternates — technology that consumer handwriting tools (Coki included) don't generate today. Print and semi-connected handwriting convert beautifully; flowing Spencerian script will come out as separate letters standing close together. If your handwriting is fully cursive, write your sample in a slightly more separated version of your hand — you'll get a far better font.

Expected — fix them rather than regenerating the whole font. Per-glyph regeneration handles "the AI misread my g," and the point editor handles "almost right, nudge that curve."
